  	Thomas was a farmer. He arrived with his wife at Castle Garden aboard the "SS Sarah Parker" on 12 July 1850.

  		Castle Garden Circa 1880. Castle Garden was built to defend New York from the British during the War of 1812 however, no battles were fought there. It was originally named castle Clinton after DeWitt Clinton the Mayor of New York. It was leased to the city in 1824 and renamed Castle Garden. Today it is a national park and again called Castle Clinton.
