From The History of the Brigham Family: "He was a shoemaker and farmer. In 1812 he walked 90 miles to Boston for work; then engaged on a coast vessel and was captured in the War of 1812. He kept a shoeshop in Boston. In 1833, he started for the West ; drove to Brattleboro, Vt., thence took stage to Troy, N. Y., canal to Buffalo; by lake to Detroit; then walked 125 miles to Gun (or Gull) Prairie, Mich,; then he returned for his family and drove back the next year. He cleared a farm and saw hard times. He began the first regular Sunday meetings in Allegan County, Mich., in 1835, and was licensed to preach. For 10 years he led meetings, Sunday-school and attended funerals, besides doing his farm-work. At the age of 75 he wrote an interesting life-sketch for his family from which this is taken. |
