He graduated from Harvard University in 1866. He studied anatomy with Professor Jeffries Wyman until November 1866 when he entered Harvard Medical School. In April 1869 he was appointed house surgeon to the Boston City Hospital. He obtained his medical degree in 1870 and continued his studies in Europe. In August 1870 he was chosen Surgeon-in-Chief of the "Ambulance Internationale Francaise de l'Ecole Forestière de Nancy" a position he held for the seven months of the Franco-Prussian war. President Thiers decorated him with the "Legion of Honor". The Emperor of Germany presented him with the "Iron Cross" in consideration of his distinguished services during the war. He published a number of surgical cases in English and French. In 1872 he moved to San Fransisco CA where he was elected surgeon to the french hospital. |
