The Capture of Jefferson Davis. Orders to pursue Confederate President Jefferson Davis were initiated by the U.S. War Department largely because at the time it was assumed he was complicit in the assassination of President Lincoln. A $100,000 reward was promised for anyone who could bring in the president and his aides. On May 9th the 1st Wisconsin and 4th Michigan Cavalries surrounded his camp. In his his haste to escape he grabbed his wife's overcoat. It didn't take long before the story expanded to the point that he was said to be dressed as a woman which, is the view taken in this Currier & Ives print. |
