Benvolio Sanborn Call-up Notice. A poorly defined boarder laid out in the Treaty of Paris signed in 1783 left an area called the Indian Stream territory in a kind of limbo. Depending on who was doing the reading this area that covered about 282 square miles was part off New Hampshire, Canada or neither.
On July 9, 1832 the 300 or so people living there decided to form their own country. This was never formally recognized by the United States and on August 5, 1835 it was formally annexed by the state of New Hampshire.
This was soon tested and, when the Sheriff of Coos county arrested an individual for an unpaid debt the result was a small skirmish.
The Governor mobilized the militia and faced with invasion and occupation the leaders of Indian stream backed down.
