Notes |
- Samuel would have been about 3 years old at the time of his mother's marriage to Edmund Rice. The story of his life as far as it can be documented begins in 1673 when he received a 25 acre grant for surveying and laying out the
town of Worcester.
During Queen Anne's War, Samuel Brigham was one of the committee to assign the inhabitants of Marlborough to the twenty-six log forts erected. Among these, Samuel Brigham's Garrison, Thomas Brigham's Garrison, and Nathan Brigham's Garrison. In this war Samuel Brigham was the lieutenant under Capt. Thomas Howe. He received a bounty for destroying an Indian. While he was called Captain during the years of the Revolutionary war there is no Revolutionary War marker at his grave.
6 Mar 1690 Samual became a freeman. In the years 1699 and 1703, tradition states, he was town treasurer, although the town records for that period were burned so this cannot be verified. He was selectman in 1707 and 1710, and representative to the General Court in 1697-99 and in 1705.
Samuel Brigham has the distinction of being the father of the Marlborough tanning and shoe trades. The first tannery in the town was erected by Samuel about 1700. The tannery ceased to be used in 1859. It was taken down piecemeal for many years. It was wholly demolished by 1876. Many of Samuel's descendants carried on in the shoe business in Marlborough, in one capacity or another. Today shoe manufacturing in Marlborough is relegated to history.
Samuel Brigham lies buried in the Old Common Cemetery in the rear of the Academy in Marlborough He is the only one of the second generation of Brighams whose grave is marked. The headstone is rather ornate. It is likely Thomas and his mother also lie in this cemetery, but there is no documentation. Their burial places are unknown.
