13 year old Evelyn Reed was hurrying home from school to bake a cake for her mother when she disappeared while walking on Cemetery road. Six days later her body was found. She had been assaulted and murdered by being stabbed with a screw driver. Under her finger nails they found blue wool fibers that didn't belong to any of her clothes. They were able to identify the fibers as matching a particular work jacket typically sold to laborers. They were sold in one place in town. Some of the purchasers could be identified because they had been charged. Sorting through the names investigators immediately started focusing on Norman J Wheelock who had previously spent time in Attica Prison for assault. Further evidence was collected and a trial was held. After just two and a half hours of deliberation the jury found Wheelock guilty of first degree murder. Defense attorneys argued for a disposition of insanity but, it was rejected. August 1st, 1940 at 11:00pm Wheelock met his end in the electric chair at Sing Sing. |
