Biographical Information |
3 Mar 1901 |
Mrs. Emily Martin, aged 67 years, was found dead on 3 March 1901. Evidence showed she was strangled while resisting a rape attempt. Witnesses testified that James F Wheelock had threatened Mrs. Martin. Further testimony said that he was drinking and had been seen at Mrs. Martin's house at the approximate time of the murder. James was convicted of the murder.
James maintained he was innocent. The case went to an appellate court but, the conviction was upheld. The case was never taken to the state supreme court even though his family paid his lawyer $1,500. To do so.
On June 13th James was hanged at San Quentin Prison. |
