A drawing by a Confederate officer of a "bull battery" drawn before the Battle of Bull Run. The chests that double as seats for the cannoneers contain ammo. In the background is a military camp consisting of simple plank buildings. One in the front has bars over the entrance and is likely a prison. In the center of the camp the Confederate flag flies. (Not to be confused with the "Southern Cross" battle flag.

The Battle of Bull Run. (sometimes referred to as the Battle of Manassas)
Kurz & Allison lithograph. The Battle of Bull Run was the first major battle of the Civil War. Both sides were poorly prepared for what happened. The Confederates eventually came out on top because they were able to use the railroad to get reinforcements into place forcing a disorganized Union retreat. The battle foreshadowed the fact that the war would be longer and costlier than anyone had imagined.

The men wearing red pants were Zouaves. Zouaves were infantry soldiers of the French Army. The 11th New York Infantry adopted their style of dress and tactics. Like the other Union forces they suffered heavy loss at Bull Run.
