    The Holland-America Line ship was built in 1878 by Harland & Wolff, Ltd. in Belfast, Ireland. It had an iron hull, weighed 3,329 tons, and was 397 ft long X 37 ft wide. It had four masts and one smokestack. It was originally designed as a freighter and was later converted to a passenger ship, able to carry 920 passengers.

    From 1 Aug 1855 through 18 Apr 1890 most immigrants came through Castle Garden in New York city.

    Castle Garden was built to defend New York from the British during the War of 1812 however, no battles were fought there. It was originally named castle Clinton after DeWitt Clinton the Mayor of New York. It was leased to the city in 1824 and renamed Castle Garden. Today it is a national park and again called Castle Clinton.

    At least 8 million immigrants passed through Castle Garden. The actual number may be closer to 12 million but, Most of Castle Garden's immigrant records were destroyed in a fire on June 15, 1897.

    The American Hotel was established in 1896. It was located on East Main Street. (Since renamed East Michigan). It was later renamed the Park American and later still the Harris. It closed in 1968 and was demolished.
