  Biographical Information	Gershom settled on the homestead of his father in Marlborough, and was surveyor for the west end of the town, 1710; tythingman,1716; constable, 1721; one of a committee to "seat the meeting," 1727; selectman, 1733. In ancient England, a tythingman was the chief man of a borough, and later, a petty constable. In New England in the 17th century he had similar duties to the earlier tythingman, but the tythingman was charged with the prevention of disorderly conduct; later, he was in charge of enforcing the observance of the Sabbath and in keeping order in worship services; he was also a collector of the tithes during the service.
