Notes |
- For four years he was a member of the Bancroft's school Varsity crew which was never defeated by Yale. He prepared for college at Phillips Exiter Academy. He enrolled in Harvard with the class of 1779, but graduated in 1780. He had a tenor voice "of unusually pure quality" which made him a prominent member of the glee club. After graduation he was first with a publishing house and then for a year with the Boston Custom House. During this time he organized the Lotus Glee Club. He moved west, for three years he was into real-estate in Omaha. From there he moved to Salt Lake and was in the oil business. In 1893 he was made U.S. Marshall tor the territory of Utah. He was reappointed to this position when Utah became a state, serving until 1897. In 1898 he moved to Pasadena California due to his wife's health. He became a traveling passenger agent for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. The spent a great deal of time traveling the west. Especially Arizona and New Mexico. In 1900 he began lecturing on subjects connected with the far west and Indian life. This remained his profession until his death. He made his home in Wheaton Illinois and maintained an office in Chicago. His lecture tours often brought him back to Massachusetts.
