Titanic Dogs.
Titanic Dogs.
Twelve dogs were aboard the Titanic. Only three survived the sinking.

It is undocumented but, Ann Elizabeth Isham was said to have been in a lifeboat when she was told that she could not bring her Great Dane on board with her. She chose to get out of the lifeboat. She became one of four first class women passengers who died in the sinking. A few days later, a passenger on a passing ship reported seeing a woman's body floating in the ocean clinging to the body of a large dog but, the body was not recovered.

John Pillsbury Snyder married Nelle Stevenson. They went to Europe for their honeymoon. On April 15, 1912 they were aboard the RMS Tiatnic returning to the United States. It was reported that a crewman had called out "Put in the brides and grooms first!". John and his bride were placed aboard lifeboat number seven and thus were among those that survived the sinking of the Titanic.

After the war Daniel Dudley Avery bought out the last of the non-family landowners so that the island came completely under the family's control.

Edmund McIlhenny was the husband of Mary Eliza Avery. Before the war he was a banker but, that industry was destroyed by the war so he moved to the island where he developed the pepper sauce that became the Tabasco Sauce empire.

Salt mining continues on an industrial scale a is run by the Cargill Corporation.

Frank Leslie's illustrated newspaper November 19, 1864. Page 140. The small figure depicted being held in the background is Minnie's sister who was also a dwarf. Ironically this illustrates Minnie's greatest lament. People constantly wanted to hold or pet them. In her memoirs she wrote; "It seemed impossible, to make people understand at first that I was not a child..."
