It was the first time astrouauts had worked outside of a spacecraft since a 1973 Skylab mission and, the first time the new Extravehicular Mobility Unit (spacesuit) designed for shuttle missions was used. Story and Donald H. Peterson spent 4 hours and 17 minutes performing tests in the shuttles payload bay.
