Sperm Whale Attack.
Sperm Whale Attack.
The death of Captain Avery is still being researched. However given what we know this is likely what the last moments looked like. We know it was a violent event by the condition of his body. Given that he choose to leave the ship and be on the scene of the hunt it's likely because it was a Sperm Whale which would have been the most valuable of the whales they hunted. It would also be the most aggressive. A sperm whale's jaw is on the bottom of it's head. To attack something on the surface it would roll over and strike up-side down.

This picture is from the book; The Cruise of the Cachalot : Round the World After Sperm Whales by Frank Thomas, Bullen, pace (facing) 234. Published 1906. While we don't know for sure this is likely what any one who witnessed the incident saw.

Spirit of Carnauba Sikorsky S-38
Spirit of Carnauba Sikorsky S-38
The "Spirit of Carnauba". A replica of a Sikorsky S-38. The original sank in 1938 at Manokwari Bay in Indonesia. The plane was used by Herbert in 1935 for a 7.500 mile expedition to Brazil to find a sustainable source of Carnaúba wax needed for his business. Herbert thought the journy changed his life. Upon his return he wrote the book "Carnauba Expedition: The Story of a Scientific Adventure by Airplane to Study the Carnauba Palm at Its Source in the Interior of Brazil. He wrote the dedication to his son; "To Sammy, I hope you make this trip some day. It changed my life. Love, Dad." The plane now hangs in the S C Johnson world headquarters in Racine, Wisconsin. In the Background is the S C Johnson research tower. Herbert commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design the S C Johnson headquarters of which the tower is part of.
