 | Lincoln-Douglas Debates. Stephen A Douglas is best remembered as the man who ran against Abraham Lincoln. The Lincoln - Douglass debates were held as both ran for Senator from Illinois. While Lincoln would lose the race to Douglas the debates are credited with giving Lincoln the exposure he needed to run for president.
