Purring Albanian civil war of 1997 a referendum was held to restore monarchy. The King questioned the integrity of the election. When the police intervened, gunfire broke out and, one person was killed Leka fled. He was tried in absentia, for sedition and, sentenced to three years imprisonment.

| Zog I, King of the Albanians - Husband of my 7th cousin 4 times removed. Under President Zogu Albania was a police state. Civil liberties were suppressed. The press was limited as to what could be reported and, political opponents were murdered. The constitution gave Zogu sweeping executive and legislative powers, including the right to appoint one-third of the upper house. He held all governing power in the nation.
On September 1, 1928, Albania was transformed into a kingdom. President Zogu became Zog I, King of the Albanians. He chose to take his regal name from his surname rather than his Islamic first name in an attempt to better fit into Europe.
He survived so many assassination attempts that it's difficult to come up with an accurate number. On 7 April 1939, just two days after Zog's son and heir apparent was born, Mussolini's Italian Army invaded, facing no significant resistance. The Royal Family fled to London to live in exile. They took with them a considerable amount of gold from the National Bank.
Albania's Communist government abolished the monarchy in 1946, but, even in exile, the royal family insisted that Zog's son Leka Zogu was Albania's legitimate ruler until his death on November 30, 2011. |
