| Prison Ship HMS Jersey. The HMS Jersey was a gun ship that in 1779 was aging and no longer serviceable so it was converted into a prison ship that was moored in Wallabout Bay, New York. The ship was designed for 400 sailors but, at any given time there were about 1100 prisoners being held inhuman conditions. It is estimated 8000 men spent time aboard the Jersey before the British surrendered. In 1783 as the evacuated the ship was burned to prevent it's capture. |

| Professor William Arthur Paarmann Professor William A. Paarmann - 1917
Prof. William A. (Will) Paarmann, Sr. was a professor of music, violin, and clarinet at St. Ambrose College and directed their orchestra from 1913 through 1929. He also taught at the Immaculate Conception Academy and Augustana College. He was born January 1, 1879, in New Hampton, Iowa, and came to Davenport as a child. He graduated from the 9th grade in 1893, at Davenport's School No. 3, and delivered the class declamation entitled “Lifeboat Ready.” In 1898 he studied viola under Prof. C. F. Toenniges in Rock Island. He attended the (Theodore) Spiering School of Music, one of the world’s greatest violin teachers, and the Ludwig Becker School of Music, both located in Chicago. In 1917, Paarmann became a charter member and was appointed first violinist in the Tri-City Symphony Orchestra. He was a member of the Hawkeye Ensemble at Radio Station WOC from 1930 to 1935. From 1935 to 1948 he taught music in the Davenport Public Schools system. William was also the father of Ralph and Carl Paarmann. Ralph was a music teacher with the Iowa Public School System for 39 years, retiring in 1989. Twenty-nine of those years were spent as Director of Bands at Davenport West High School. Ralph also directed the First Christian Church Choir in Davenport for forty years. He was a member of the Iowa Bandmasters Association and started the Retired Director's Band (IBARD). Carl served in World War II and then became the principal bassoonist with the Denver Symphony for a few years before returning to Davenport in 1951. For a while, he managed the M. L. Parker Dept. Store record department until opening his own business: “Paarmann’s Record Store.” He became the music director at Assumption High School when it opened and later joined the public schools, teaching at Sudlow Junior High and finally West High School until his retirement in 1985.
Under the direction of Mr. Paarmann, the St. Ambrose College orchestra of 1917 received special commendation for the manner in which they rendered such selections as "Very Good Eddie," "Il Trovatore" and "Katinka." Among the talented musicians graduating in '17 included Earl J. Marron, George F. Millett and James J. Morrin, who had very ably carried the respective parts of first violin, trombone and piano.
The Paarmann sisters, Claire (cello), Fae (piano) and Mildred (viola) formed a musical trio that often played the Hotel Blackhawk from 1925-1927. The girls were three of nine siblings born to William Paarmann Sr. and Hulda (Struck) Paarmann. William Paarmann died November 17, 1957, at the age of 78, after an illness that had lasted three years. |

| Quarter Eagle. The half eagle was minted from 1908 to 1916, and in 1929. The matching quarter eagle was minted from 1908 to 1915 and from 1925–1929. The reason for the interruption was WWI. The end came as gold coins were removed from circulation.
The previous version of the $2.50 and $5.00 gold pieces omitted the motto "In God We Trust". This caused considerable controversy. It was assumed Congress was going to pass a law mandating it so it was included in the design even thought it would be some time before it became law. |
