He served in the Civil War. He enlisted as a Musician on 27 June 1861. He was the band leader in Company Band, 11th Infantry Regiment. He was discharged on 8 Aug 1862 at Harrison's Landing, VA. He enlisted in Navy Regiment U.S. Navy on 15 Feb 1864. He was discharged from Navy Regiment U.S. Navy on 9 Aug 1864.
