The Hive of the Averys.
The Hive of the Averys.
About 1656 Captain James Avery (1620-1700) built a house in the area that would eventually become Groton, Connecticut. The home became known as "The Hive of the Averys". It was occupied by Captain James's decedents for a stunning (proximate) 238 years! Sadly on July 20, 1894 a spark from a passing locomotive started a fire on it's roof and the home was destroyed.

The first major project of the Avery Family Association was the creation the James Avery monument. Located on the very site of the Avery house. Some of the ruined foundation and chimney are still there.

The monument is a 23-foot-high polished granite column topped off with a bronze bust of James Avery. The bust was designed by famed sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt who is the 7X great grandson of James Avery.

I am still researching the details. The circular makers mark seen on the china was used from 1940 to 1961.

The pattern was available in blue or red. If you want to own a piece it may take some searching but, occasionally you can find them on internet auction sites or places that specialize in replacement pieces for obsolete china patterns.
