He was the first white child born in Dunkirk, New York In 1834, he moved to Lodi, Ohio with his parents. He and his wife lived in a log cabin 1 2 x 1 6 feet, one story, with one room, lighted by 2 two windows; the door was provided with a wooden latch with " latch string " through the hole to lift it. This cabin was built on 80 acres given him by his father. In 1844, he received a sprain and sold out. He then moved to Chatham Centre, Ohio, where he built a store, which he sold in 1853. He moved to Lena, where he bought 240 acres with a sawmill. In 1859, Mr. Brigham moved to Wauseon, Ohio, formed a partnership with Isaac Springer and opened a store; in 1865 he bought a flouring mill and in 1871 erected a two-story brick warehouse and went into mercantile business in this place. In 1887 he turned it over to his youngest son. Has been a Justice of the Peace, assessor, town treasurer 15 years. Postmaster, and Mayor for 2 terms, when he declined further nomination. During the Civil War he was County Commissioner on Dist. Military Commission. He was one of three to buy the West Cemetery, of which he was the leading official for 25 years. At 84 he superintended a large farm in the suburbs. |
