On June 17, 2015 during Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Carolina, Roof shot and killed nine people and injured one other.
He was apprehended after his sister Amber recognized her brother in surveillance photos released by police to the media. She called the police and identified him.
On December 15, 2016, he was convicted on 33 charges. He was sentenced to death and is awaiting execution.
