Occupation |
Cece was an artist. She worked for Chrysler who at the time was a NASA contractor. She was the only woman in the art department at Cape Canaveral. Her time was taken up doing drawings for instruction manuals, art for presentations, and even illustrations for the Nasa employee's magazine.
Her real claim to fame was when John Glenn recruited her to paint the "Friendship 7" mission logo on his Mercury space capsule. She went on to paint the logos for Scott Carpenter's "Aurora 7" and Wally Schirra's "Sigma 7" capsules. To do her job, Bibby became the first and only woman to ascend the Mercury launch gantry and go inside the "white room" that surrounded the vehicle. This created quite a bit of friction with the pad boss who was quite the male chauvinist.
The painted panels still exist but, for the most part reentry erased her work. |

| Cece Bibby. Cece Bibby is standing by a U-2 spy plane. The pilots hated it because it always seemed to be having mechanical problems so they got Cece to paint this lemon logo on it.
Every time the plane was sent back to the Lockheed corporation for repair they would fix the problem and paint over the artwork. Every time the plane was returned to the squadron the pilots would get her to repaint it. |
