Stamps & Coins |
| Perry Expedition. Perry Expedition. Issued July 14, 1953 in Washington D.C. this five cent stamp honors the mission assigned by President Millard Fillmore to force the opening of Japanese ports to American trade, through the use of gunboat diplomacy if necessary. Eventually through negotiations, the Convention of Kanagawa was signed on March 31, 1854. It ended Japan's 220-year-old policy of national seclusion and opened Japanese ports to American vessels. |
