In 1842 while serving aboard the U.S. Frigate United States he was accused of "Leaving his station before regularly relieved" while serving as Officer of the Deck. he plead guilty and was sentenced to public reprimand by the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Squadron and reduction of pay by half for two years..
