He was a private in Captain John Stanton's company, 4th regiment in the French and Indian War. He was a captain of the militia in the Revolutionary war. He was in the siege around New York in 1776 and, was in Captain Walker's company and marched under Lafayette in 1780. He was killed at the Massacre at Fort Griswold |

The Fort Griswold Massacre (17) The fort Griswold Battle was one of the last of the American Revolution. It occurred September 6, 1781 in a fort by the town of Groton, Connecticut. Eighty-eight brave men lost their lives. Most of them were slaughtered after the fort was surrendered. It was particularly costly to the Avery family which took a huge blow.
