  • Name Parke Avery
    Born 9 Dec 1710
    Gender Male
Library book: The Groton Avery Clan 00067
Biographical Information Park was known as "Elder" because he separated from the "standing order" and preached every Sunday to the people of Groton in the "great room" in the Hive of the Averys. This room was actually part of the First New London church. His Great Grandfather James bought the church when a new one was planned and disassembled it so he could reuse the building materials.

In 1775 Park was part of a committee that identified the need for Groton
heights. As a result Fort Griswold was built. Later it would become a tragic part of Avery history.
    James Avery House
    James Avery House
In 1656 James built a house that would stand for over two centuries. It became known as the "Avery Hive". It might still be standing today but in 1894 a spark from a passing locomotive landed on the roof of the house and the resulting fire destroyed it.
