James Avery House In 1656 James built a house that would stand for over two centuries. It became known as the "Avery Hive". It might still be standing today but in 1894 a spark from a passing locomotive landed on the roof of the house and the resulting fire destroyed it.

Avery Memorial. In 1900 the Avery Memorial was dedicated. A tall granite column topped off with a bronze bust of James. The nearby piles of stone are the remnants of the homes chimneys. The base is engraved with the generations of Averys that occupied the home.

Avery Point Lighthouse was named for Captain James Avery. It was built in 1943 as part of a Coast Guard training facility. It wasn't lit until 1944 due to war time security reasons. The light was deactivated on June 25, 1967 when the training facility moved. It was restored and, the relighting and re-dedication ceremony was held on October 15, 2006. |
