    While some sources suggest he arrived in 1630 or 1631 there are no records for him until 1641.

    About 1650 James came to the area which would become known as New London, Connecticut.

    In 1656 James built a house that would stand for over two centuries. It became known as the "Avery Hive". It might still be standing today but in 1894 a spark from a passing locomotive landed on the roof of the house and the resulting fire destroyed it.

    In 1900 the Avery Memorial was dedicated. A tall granite column topped off with a bronze bust of James. The nearby piles of stone are the remnants of the homes chimneys. The base is engraved with the generations of Averys that occupied the home.

    Biographical Information 1943 
    Avery Point Lighthouse was named for Captain James Avery. It was built in 1943 as part of a Coast Guard training facility. It wasn't lit until 1944 due to war time security reasons. The light was deactivated on June 25, 1967 when the training facility moved. It was restored and, the relighting and re-dedication ceremony was held on October 15, 2006.
