He served as the deputy assistant to President Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1973. As part of his duties he oversaw installation of the taping system that the President ordered for the White House. When he was questioned by The Senate Watergate Committee he revealed the existence of the White House taping system. Butterfield had no involvement in the scandal, but once the Senate learned of the taping system the President's fate was sealed. |
