    William was a communications officer aboard the USS Juneau (CL-52) which was torpedoed and sunk on 13 Nov 1942.

    The USS Juneau (CL-52) was a United States Navy Atlanta-class light cruiser. On 12 November 1942 at the battle of Guadalcanal she was struck by a torpedo from a Japanese cruiser and severely damaged. She left the battle along with two other damaged cruisers. They were ambushed by a Japanese submarine. She was hit by two torpedoes. One of them struck the previously damaged area and the ship broke in two and sunk in just twenty seconds. 687 men were killed.
