Langley Aerodrome. Langley called his expirimental airplane an Aerodrome. The name is derived from Greek words meaning "air runner". |

First Flight Attempt. Langley carried out his experiments on the Potomac River. He suffered a series of failures before managing successful unmanned powered flight. The Wright brothers beat Langley to the first successful manned powered flight. |

Curtiss-Langley-Aerodrome. The aerodrome wasn't truly successful until after Langley's death. In 1914 Glenn Curtis added pontoons and made other modifications. This began a patent dispute with the Wright brother's.
