  Biographical Information	Mercy was 10 to 15 years younger than her husband and therefor persecuted in England for nonconformity. She came to New England with her sister. The name Hurd is only traditional, and the genealogical studies of Rev Abner Morse is responsible for the is responsible for the tradition. He says the tradition is direct, and probably reliable. Morse says her sister married William Cutler. On Mar 26 1676, she was with the people of Marlborough who had assembled in their meeting house for worship. The alarm was sounded and they barley reached the garrison house in time to find safety from the attacking Indians, who burned houses and barns and destroyed orchards and cattle. The towns people retreated eastward where they remained some months until peace was reassured.
  		Mercy Hurd's Cap Box. The little oak chest, pictured in the “Brigham Family History was owned by Thomas Brigham Rice of Barre, VT. He received it from his mother, Nancy (Brigham) Rice, daughter of Henry Brigham, as a child knew it, then in his grandmother's possession, as "Mercie Hunt's cap box”. The inside dimensions are 22 1/2 inches long by 7 3/4 inches wide and, 9 1/2 inches high. It is made of English oak one inch thick. The box appears to be work in the Gothic style of the 15th century, or even, probably, as old as the 14th century.
  		Mercy Hurds Cap Box 2. Today the box is on permanent display in the Worcester, Massachusetts Historical Museum having been donated by Thomas Brigham Rice (1817-1914). The box is recognized by historians as one of the oldest existing artifacts brought to America from England during the Puritan Great Migration.
