Letter written by Salmon P. Chase to Abraham Lincoln accepting the cabinet post, Secretary of the Treasury. Transcription:
Washington, Mar. 6, 1861
My dear Sir,
I accept the post which you have tendered me.
My distrust of my own judgment in this decision, and of my ability to perform adequately the duties about to devolve on me, is very great; but trusting to your indulgence and humbly invoking Divine favor and guidance, I will give my best endeavor to your service and our country's.
With the highest respect,
Yours most truly

Letter by Abraham Lincoln to Salmon Chase accepting his Resignation. Transcription:
Executive Mansion,
Washington, June 30, 1864.
My dear Sir.
Your resignation of the office of Secretary of the Treasury, sent me yesterday, is accepted. Of all I have said in commendation of your ability and fidelity, I have nothing to unsay; and yet you and I have reached a point of mutual embarrassment in our official relation which it seems can not be overcome, or longer maintained sustained, consistently with the public service. Your Obt. Servt.
