He graduated from Dartmouth, and began a career in law and politics. In 1807, he was a member of the Massachusetts state house of representatives. Later he became a member of the Massachusetts senate. The town of Ripley, Tippah, Mississippi is named after him, as are other locales in the United States, including Ripley County, Indiana, and Ripley County, Missouri. |

Aug 29, 1815, Letter to Benjamin Crowninshield U.S. Secretary of Navy with letter of recommendation for Mr. Farnham.
It reads in part:
"Mr Farnham late in the 21 Regt. wishes a letter to you. Mr. F. was appointed a Lieut. in that Regiment at my request - And I can truly say that while I knew him in the army I always considered him a brave attentive good officer."
