Occupation Tyler sought, and failed to find his fortune in the first California Gold Rush. He decided to return home. The cheapest way to do so was by sea. He boarded a ship at San Francisco. To take his mind off the conditions and hold sea sickness at bay he laid there and worked out the design for the first spring mattress.
