The first major project of the Avery Family Association was the creation the James Avery monument. Located on the very site of the Avery house. Some of the ruined foundation and chimney are still there.

The monument is a 23-foot-high polished granite column topped off with a bronze bust of James Avery. The bust was designed by famed sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt who is the 7X great grandson of James Avery.

At first the salt was mined from open pits. Much of the work was preformed by slaves. John Marsh Avery oversaw the operation of the mine. The need for salt soon became critical because of the Civil War. John was given an exemption from regular service so he could keep the salt supply moving.

Avery-Bartholomew Bridge
Avery-Bartholomew Bridge
The Avery-Bartholomew Patent Railroad Iron Bridge. Patented by Oliver Avery, Jr. and Caleb Bartholomew it is an example technological advances in American metal truss bridge designs during latter part of the nineteenth century.

Built in 1877 the bridge pictured was the first of it's kind. It crossed the Fall Creek at the Elm Street extension in Groton, NY. Built from railroad rails it was inexpensive and quick to build. It was still in use until the late 1970's

It is preserved today for it's historic significance. It is on display at a park across the street from the Groton town building.

The band began in 1981 as "The Colours". Soon after that the renamed it "The Bangs". When they were about to release there first album they discovered someone else held the rights to that name so they added "els" and as the saying goes the rest is history.

Bank of Washtenaw.
Bank of Washtenaw.
In the 1830's the economy of the territory of Michigan was flying high due to largely to the sale of land. In 1835 a group of men got together and formed the Bank of Washtenaw in Ann Arbor. Unfortunately in 1836 the United States banking system collapsed causing a panic. The underfunded bank shut down as faster than it went up. The building stood empty for almost a decade before it was converted to a private residence. Today it still stands and is used as commercial property.

Baptist Church, Fisk Hill
Baptist Church, Fisk Hill
Baptist Church, Fisk Hill - An illustration of the church on Fiske Hill, Sturbridge, Mass., is given with a Plan of the pews as remembered by Mr. Manning Leonard. The building was raised June 3. 1784. Hon. George Davis in his Historical Sketch of Sturbridge" says: "On the southern declivity of this elevation was situated the neat and comfortable Baptist Church. Here those families (the Fiskes) with others of that denomination, in various parts of the town, worshiped more than half a century. The Rev. Zenas L. Leonard was the watchman on this watchtower. Mr. Leonard was in season and out of season in his devotion to the spiritual interests of his charge." In 1833, a new church was erected, nearer the center of the town and this building was subsequently demolished. The artist is somewhat inaccurate in the representation of the vestibule doors of which there were three, one in front and the others on each side, and next to the main building. From the vestibule two winding flights of stairs led to the broad gallery which extended around three sides of the audience room. The pew marked " Dea. INoyes." should be Dea. Lyon.
