The green-tinted spectacles worn by Olds were designed to protect the eyes from the intensity of Argand lamps used during the early 1800s. These whale oil lamps were about 6 to 10 times brighter than candles. People worried that the bright flames might damage eyesight.

Nelle gave an interview two years before her passing about the RMS Titanic. She and her husband, John Pillsbury Snyder survived the sinking of the ship on April 15, 1912. They were in lifeboat #7, the first lifeboat to launch off the ship.
