The Rice capture memorial Tablet.
In 1704 children of Edmund and Thomas Rice were working in the field when they were attacked by Indians. Nahor Rice was killed. Four others were kidnapped. On 5 September 1904 the Westborough Historical Society dedicated this memorial tablet attached to a boulder at the location believed to be the location of the attack.

The Siege of Santiago.
The Siege of Santiago.
The Battles of San Juan Hill and El Carney were a success. The Americans captured the Spanish positions at both locations. On July 3, 1898, the siege of Santiago began. Company H of the Michigan 33rd was part of this. The generals figured an assault would bring massive casualties so the Americans dug in and stopped the flow of food and water into the city.

On July 4th there was a cease fire that allowed the evacuation of around 20,000 civilians. This also helped the Americans as they were able to bring in heavy weapons to support the operation. In the days that followed the Spanish took heavy casualties from Gatling guns, mortars and field artillery. On July 13th meetings began to discuss the terms of surrender. The Spanish would eventually agree to the term capitulation. The United States flag was raised over the fort at Santiago on July 17th. This picture misidentifies the date as the 13th.

Part of the attraction for the merchant was the fact that the hallmark would state that the piece was made specifically for his store.

The Souvenir Idea.
The Souvenir Idea.
Around 1894, the Brothers hired traveling salesmen specifically to market souvenir china wholesale to stores. Initially this happened in Illinois and nearby states but, eventually it would spread coast to coast. The salesmen carried pattern books that listed hundreds of varieties of pieces that were available.

Once the merchant selected a piece a scenic photo was sent to the European potteries which reproduced them as black decals. Workers applied the decal to the porcelain before the initial firing. The picture was then hand colored. Depending on the piece there may have been other hand painted decorations as well as lettering identifying the scene. Once the piece was fired the picture became a permanent decoration.

Latter when the technology had advanced far enough the decals were made in color eliminating the need for hand coloring.

The Union forces had to cross the Potomic River To get to the site of the Battle of Ball's Bluff. When they were pushed back there were too few boats to handle the retreat and the boats that were there were quickly overloaded and swamped. 223 Union soldiers were killed, 226 were wounded, and 553 were captured. Numbers that dwarf the losses suffered by the Confederate forces that day.

The USS Harvard.
While the Spanish-American war was not over, the fall of Santiago effectively ended land war in Cuba.

On August 21, 1898 Company H sailed from Santiago on steamship "Harvard". Originally it was a passenger liner the "City of New York" but, it was renamed after the college when it was put into service as a scout ship at the beginning of the war. Towards the end of the war it was used as a troop transport.

The schooner-rigged steamship arrived at Montauk Point, New York, August 26, 1898.

The 33rd left Montauk Point September 2, 1898 and, arrived at Detroit, Michigan, September 4, 1898 where they were furloughed for sixty days.

The Freds mustered out of service at Cheboygan, Michigan.

Thomas Bird's House 1637.
Thomas Bird's House 1637.
Thomas Bird of England emigrated to Dorchester, Massachusetts aboard the ship Mary & John in 1635 on it's second voyage. He built his homestead shortly thereafter. As originally built the house had only two rooms and a loft.

Thomas made a living in the tannery business. The house remained in the family and sheltered ten generations until it fell into disrepair in the late 1930's and burned down shortly after 1940.

Thomas the emigrant died 8 Jun 1667 at Dorchester. He was 54 years old. That same year the roof was raised and a second story added. His widow, Ann, died 21 Aug 1673. The house then passed to his son Thomas Bird and his wife Thankful Atherton.

His son Benjamin Bird and his wife Johanna (nee Harrise) would become the third owners.

Thomas Birds House 1776.
Corporal Thomas Bird was the fifth owner. He was 21 when he inherited it. Thomas fought at Concord, Lexington and, Bunker Hill. At some point before 1776 an addition was added to the rear of the house.

His house served as the American Army Engineers headquarters during the fortification of Dorchester heights.

Colonel Gridley of the American engineers was quartered there with his staff; Putnam, Waters, Baldwin and Knox, later to become the famous general.

One of the upper rooms was used as drafting room for drawing up the fortification plan for Dorchester Heights, a hill that was within a short distance. General George Washington rode over from Cambridge to direct the work. When the timber used to construct the ramparts was carried to the Heights, it passed down the lane in front of the house.
