| Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester Guy Carleton, First Baron of Dorchester, was the Governor of Quebec, Canada from 1768 to 1778. He came largely from a military background and he had no real political experience. His first problem would have been tough to handle even for someone with experience.
The many thousands of loyalists that came seeking refuge came from areas where they were under British law, spoke English and, attended mostly Protestant churches. The culture they found upon their arrival was mostly Catholic churches and unfamiliar French-language political institutions.
Carleton was unable make everyone happy. In response Parliament passed the Constitutional Act of 1791 which split Quebec into English-speaking Upper Canada (present-day Ontario) under English Common Law with its own assembly, and the French majority Lower Canada (Quebec). |

| Hadrosaur Herd. In 1963 after an extensive study of dinosaur footprints, Ostrom authored a paper on the Hadrosaurus, a type of duck-billed dinosaur. The creatures were seen as slow moving beasts that lived in swamps like hippopotami. Ostrom argued that the herbivorous creatures were active land creatures that traveled in heards “like bipedal buffaloes.” |

| Half Eagle. The last 5$ gold piece, popularly known as the Half Eagle was designed by Bela Lyon Pratt. The coins are now highly respected by collectors but, it didn't start out that way. The coin had many things about it that were unique. The most obvious is that the design instead of standing above the surface of the coin it was sunken into the coin.
This was done to minimize wear and, according to some sources because President Roosevelt thought it made the coins look more "regal" mimicking the look ancient Roman coinage. Still other sources credit the president's friend William Sturgis Bigelow who wanted the coins to be more stack-able.
Unfortunately critics though this meant the coin would fill with dirt and transfer disease. |

| Hard Cider. Whatever you may have heard it was about land and booze.
Frontier law allowed people to claim ownership of land through development of a permanent homestead. One way to prove a claim was by planting 50 apple trees. Traveling through Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois, Chapman would plant not random seeds but, orchards. Once the orchard matured he would then sell the land to settlers. It was a strategy that made him fairly wealthy for his time.
You wouldn't want to eat John's apples. They were small and tart. They were not meant to be eaten but to be transformed into hard cider. Post revolution all the way up to prohibition hard cider was very popular in America and, sometimes safer than the water which might contain bacteria.
Prohibition destroyed John's legacy. FBI agents took to the orchards with axes and, made sure they could no longer be used to produce alcohol. Today only one of John's trees is known to survive.
Never the less while edible apples were not his intention, apples of the day were cultivated through grafting not planting seeds. Grafting produced apples that never changed. The seeds he planted allowed for mutations. When you visit the market today and get to choose from many varieties of apples it can be considered a gift from John and his work. |
