| Forcing Slavery. It is a debated topic as to whether or not Stephen Douglas supported slavery. He did own a plantation on which slaves were used. Perhaps the best that could be said was that he saw slavery as a political issue and not a human rights issue. As a politician he tried to please both sides of the issue. This political cartoon that originally appeared in Harper's Weekly in 1856 leaves no doubt as to the cartoonist opinion. Douglass is one of the men depicted as forcing slavery down the throat of a "Freesoiler" (an anti-slavery party) while in the right corner in the background there is a figure that has been lynched.
Kneeling next to Douglas is President Franklin Pierce. He stood against anti-slavery groups. He supported and signed the Kansas–Nebraska Act which allowed settlers of a territory to decide whether slavery would be allowed within it's borders. He also actively enforced the Fugitive Slave Act. |

| Fort Griswold. In more modern times we refer to The Battle of Groton Heights or The Battle of Fort Griswold but, when it happened it was the Fort Griswold Massacre.
Early British historians tend to look for excuses for what happened and as such some call the event "controversial". Clearly though Colonel Ledyard who was in charge of the fort surrendered when it was over run. He offered his sword to the British officer who used it to kill him. The British then opened fire. Sergeant Rufus Avery in his recollections of the event claimed that the attack was called off only to prevent the chance that the musket fire might set off the fort's powder magazine.
Of the 150 men at the fort 80 died and 60 were wounded. Many of the wounded would later die as a result of those wounds. The survivors were all taken prisoner. Beyond the atrocity at the fort the British destroyed the town of New London. |
