Mayflower Compact
Mayflower Compact
After more than two months at sea, the pilgrims arrived at the New England coastline. A storm had driven them more than 220 miles northeast of their intended destination, the mouth of the Hudson River. They sailed from England with a royal patent to settle that region. However with supplies running low and the risk of wrecking the ship high some Mayflower passengers threatened to abandon the colony if they did not land. Refuge was found in Massachusetts harbor. To ensure the colonists continued to respect the rule of law, 41 of the men aboard the ship signed the Mayflower Compact, which outlined the governing principles of the Plymouth Colony. One of the was Thomas Rogers.

The stamp was issued December 12, 1920 to mark the occasion of the Pilgrim Tercentenary.

Oliver Hazard Perry
Oliver Hazard Perry
The Battle of Lake Erie stamp depict a painting by William Henry Powell. Commissioned to do a painting “illustrative of some naval victory”, Powell chose to depict the moment when Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry made his way from his severely damaged flagship, the USS Lawrence, in a rowboat through enemy fire to the USS Niagara.

Tugging at Oliver's coat as if urging him to sit down is his 13-year-old brother, Alexander, who served as Perry’s midshipman. Sources do not agree on whether Alexander actually accompanied his brother in the rowboat. The helmsman is also seen gesturing "down" with his left hand. Towards the front of the boat one of the rowers has raised a hand in response to a near hit. While standing in the boat had exposed him to additional risk as he headed for the Niagara, “Perry’s luck” became legendary.
